Cities That Are Less LGBTQ Friendly

 



Despite a growing acceptance of LGBTQ people, some cities are less LGBTQ-friendly than others. Missoula, Montana is considered the progressive bulwark of the Big Sky state, home to the University of Montana and LGBT-friendly running and chorus clubs. The city is also the first in Montana to pass anti-discrimination laws. Other Montana cities that are deemed LGBTQ-friendly include Bozeman and Helena.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has recommendations for providing quality family planning services for patients of all backgrounds, including those with limited English proficiency. The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA) has created a directory of LGBTQ-friendly health care providers in each state. Jackson, Hattiesburg, and Tupelo, Mississippi, have multiple providers that are LGBTQ-friendly. These physicians are likely to receive more patient loyalty if they are more inclusive.

Rutgers University - New Brunswick is an historic college founded in 1766. The university has a population of about 48,000 students. Its Center for Social Justice Education and LGBT Communities (CQE-LC) aims to support students' needs and ensure a safe, supportive environment for their peers. Besides its resources, the LGBTQ+ Center offers training initiatives, a universal restroom map, and services to support LGBTQ students.

Employers can do their part to promote Lgbtq friendly workplaces. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Corporate Equality Index, released each year, ranks companies based on their LGBTQ-friendliness. This year, 767 businesses received the top rating of 100%. This means that gender identity is now a part of 94% of Fortune 500 companies' non-discrimination policies. In 2002, only 3% of Fortune 500 companies were LGBT-friendly. Many of these companies have open jobs on Monster.

Seattle welcomes all, and Capitol Hill is the gay epicenter. Capitol Hill has rainbow-painted crosswalks and is gay-owned and gay-friendly. Seattle hosts two Pride festivals - the Gay and Lesbian Festival and the Seattle Women's Chorus, the largest LGBTQ-identified chorus in the world. Adding LGBTQ+-friendly attributes to GMB listings is quick and easy if you've got the right information. Just log in to your GMB account and navigate to the Info tab. Scroll down to the Attributes section and choose the LGBT-friendly attribute. Your listing should be updated within three business days.
